Welcome
to the Joint Chapter of PES, PELS, IAS, and IES
You are now visiting the
new revamped web site of the IEEE Joint Chapter of Power
Engineering, Industry Applications, Power Electronics, and
Industrial Electronics. This web site development is part of our
effort to improve communication between the Society and its members.
In 2005 our Joint Chapter had made substantial effort in holding
conferences and technical talks, as well as supporting 2005 Industry
Applications Society Annual General Meeting.? This year we will
change our tone, we put our focus in improving our local support,
include the revamping of the Joint Chapter Web, the promotion of
Joint Chapter membership to University students, and the
organization of interesting talks and visits to local members.
It is my great pleasure to take up this challenge as the Chairman of
the Joint Chapter of PES/IAS/PELS/IES. Our executive team counts on
your continue support to our Joint Chapter.

History of the Power Joint
Chapter (by Dr FC Chan, Past Chairman, 1988-89)
Formation
The Hong Kong IEEE PES/IAS Joint Chapter was established in 1983.
Mr. D.S. McGeachie was the first Joint Chapter chairman. The first
executive meeting was held on 19 May 1983. From then technical
presentations, visits and special events were organized to promote
Power Engineering and Industry Applications to members and the
general public. With the rapid development in Power Electronics
activities in Hong Kong, Power Electronics Society was incorporated
into the Joint Chapter was formally renamed as the Joint Chapter of
PES/IAS/PELS in 1997. With total number of members in the Joint
Chapter is now more than 200 and we hope the number will grow
steadily in the future.
Technical Presentations
Technical presentation has been the most frequent activity. From
1983 to 1998, the Joint Chapter organized 99 presentations. Speakers
from industry, academic institutions, and prominent experts were
invited to give presentations on power engineering, industrial
drives, energy management, engineering quality, building services,
wiring, power electronics, and many other interesting topics. Most
of these seminars were well attended.
Workshop and Symposium
In the fast changing world of technology, continue education is
essential. The Joint Chapter organized 20 short courses throughout
the years. These short courses cover topics in building services,
electrical engineering, wiring regulations, industrial drives, power
engineering, high voltage engineering and power electronics. In 1993
the Joint Chapter organized the First IEEE Workshop on Switch Mode
Power Supply. The second and third workshop were also organized in
1995 and 1997 respectively. In 1996 and 1998, a Symposium on
'Industrial Drives and Traction' and 'Power Quality Issues in Hong
Kong' were also held respectively. These workshop and symposium were
well attended by local engineers and academics and it is being
prepared to be a regular bi-annual event of the Joint Chapter. Our
students have been served too, throughout the years special student
seminars were organized to attract students to join the engineering
disciplines. Seminars such as "The Career of Electrical Engineers"
and introductory seminars by experienced engineers were organized.
In addition, video shows were also organized to let student s know
more about Power Engineering and the Industry.
Technical Visits
The Joint Chapter also organized technical visits to engineering
sites such as power plants, substations, control centers, tunnels,
industrial centers, airline company, and many other organizations.
These visits were well attended by members and very often
oversubscribed. Occasionally visit to places away from Hong Kong
were organized, such as the pump storage power station, the Three
Gorges Hydropower station and the Daya Bay nuclear power station in
China. Altogether there were 37 visits from 1983 to 1998.
Thanks to the support of our members, speakers at our presentations,
and organizations which supported our activities. Special thanks to
past committee members and past chairmen who have devoted a lot of
effort to make the past years so fruitful.
Post Essay Note
With effect from 24 October 2001, the Chapter has been changed to
PE/IA/PEL/IE Societies Joint Chapter of Hong Kong Section.
